Hair Cutting Terms

Talking to a hairdresser can be awkward when you’re not sure of hair cutting terminology. Study these definitions, to avoid a mane malfunction!
Spencer’s Hair Designs Stylists reveal hair cutting terms to help you communicate, and receive the best possible outcome of your salon visit!

Hair Cutting Terms You Can Understand

Blunt Hair Cut

Hair Cutting
A haircut that is all one length with no layers, can be short or long. This cut is a great for thin, fine or fragile hair to preserve the density and integrity of the hair.

Hair Texture

The term hair texture can refer to hair that is fine, coarse or medium hair texture. In hair cutting the term texturing refers to different techniques used we to remove bulk in certain areas or create volume. Hair stylists use various tools and techniques when creating a certain detail
in the interior of the haircut without losing length, great for creating volume on straight, short and undone styles.

Cutting Techniques

Point cutting techniques is when the shear tips snip out small pieces of hair at the length to create softness and movement. Razor cut for straight hair only. A razor cut creates choppy pieces layers. Also, removes unwanted bulk. Techniques and tool that slide along the hair shaft of curly hair only causes damage and can lead to considerable frizz. Curly hair needs to be cut blunt and often specific areas need to be thinned in order to create the desired silhouette. Therefore a blunt internal cut works best on curly hair.

Fringe

A fringe is a European name for Bangs. This can be a face-framing layer across the forehead. A fringe can be cut straight across for heavy blunt bangs, choppy or layered blending into the rest of the haircut.

Layers

Layers are separate from the overall length; they are shorter pieces of hair that blend seamlessly within the haircut. They can be on the surface or within the haircut. Layers provide volume. It can build fullness to a particular part of your hairstyle, as in a stacked bob or wedge line.

Graduation

The hair graduates from long to short or short to long. This can relate to graduating the back of a stacked bob, while forward graduation refers to layering around the front of the haircut framing the face.

Point Cutting

Point cutting technique- Short pretty hair cut
Cutting the hair with the scissors positioned vertically. This technique gives a light texture, softness, and movement to the ends of the hair.

Dusting

stacked wedge bob with detail finishing
Means to cut the smallest amount of hair at the ends, to remove fragile or split ends. Perfect for growing hair out longer or clean up to present hair shape.

Dry Cutting

Typically, this is a second- round of hair cutting done when hair is already dry. This is when precision and haircut quality finishing takes place. For this reason, our stylists agree, this is the most important part of a haircut. We highly recommend having your hair styled after a haircut. Dry cutting can also be a primary cutting method that’s great for attention to shape and detail. It also allows your hairstyle to be cut the way you prefer to wear your hair texture.

Bob
A haircut with the weight line length at your chin area below your ears. A Lob is a longer version of the bob, with the weight line length grazing the collarbone.

Pixie

Short haircut close to the scalp. Softness is added with texture techniques to create fullness. This is a low maintenance easy wear hairstyle.

Razor Cut

This tool is used to remove unwanted bulk, increase volume, add choppiness and to detail to a style, leaving it with lighter, tapered ends. Razor cutting is not advisable for curly hair. It can induce damage and create frizz. Curly hair is best cut with blunt interior shaping.

HAIR COLORIST DEFINITIONS

HOW TO TALK TO YOUR COLORIST:
HAIRCOLOR TERMS & DEFINITIONS

1. Basecolor: Color applied at the root area or all-over before a dimensional/creative color technique is done.

2. Contrast: Contrast is a value applied to highlights. High-contrast highlights are much lighter than the surrounding hair and provide a dramatic look. Lower contrast highlights result in a more natural look.

3. Cool: Cool is a tonal value that can apply to blonde, brunette, and red shades. A color is said to have “cool tones” if it tends toward blue, violet or green. Cool colors include platinum blondes, ash browns, and plum reds.

4. Coverage: Coverage is a measure of a haircolor’s ability to cover gray. Some haircolor formulations are too transparent to effectively cover gray hair. Redken Color Gels Permanent Conditioning Haircolor provides exceptional gray coverage with resistance to fading.

5. Dimension: Dimension is a function of the range of tones in your hair. A head of hair that is all one color is said to be “flat” or lacking dimension. Your colorist can add dimension to your hair with highlights or lowlights.

6. Double-process: A double-process color refers to anytime two color services are done in one visit. Generally this is done by doing the first color service, washing and drying the hair, then doing the second color. This can include lightening the hair then applying a toner, or doing a permanent color followed by a glaze.

7. Express Highlights: Express Highlights are done by applying a small amount of foils or painted-on pieces, usually focused on framing the face.

8. Glaze: Glazes involve using a semi-permanent color to enhance, enrich, change, match, tone down or intensify natural or color-treated hair while harmonizing contrast.

9. Hair Painting: Hair Painting, also known as balayage, is the process of free-handing or sweeping hair color, lightener or toner downwards in soft strokes directly on the surface of the desired section. This method is used to create dimension with a natural, softer look.

10. Highlights: Highlighting hair means isolating select strands in the hair and treating them with a haircolor or lightener to make them lighter than their base/natural color. Highlights can add dimension by contrasting with the rest of the hair and are created with foils, a cap or special combs or brushes used for “painting on” the color.

11. Lift: Lift is the chemical process of lightening the color of the hair. Different haircolor formulations have different lifting abilities.

12. Lowlights: Lowlights are created by using color with foils, caps, or painted on to darken specific pieces and create dimension. Generally low lights will be 2-3 levels darker than your basecolor and slightly warmer. This can be used for a more natural look or create accents within the hair.

13. Rebalancing: Rebalancing is the process of bringing the hair back into balance, and can be created with the combination of highlights and lowlights, and/or glazes.

14. Single-process: A single process refers to any color service that is done in one step. This can be using a permanent color that lifts and deposits, a glaze, highlights/lowlights without toning, or a creative color service with only one process.

15. Texture: Texture, as defined by the diameter of an individual hair strand, is generally described as fine, medium, or coarse. Your stylist will factor in your hair’s texture when determining your best color formulation.

16. Trend Pastel: Trend Pastel refers to the softened, lightened hues of colors such as red, purple, green, orange, yellow, or blue. Pastel tones of color are meant as colorants and toning shades, and are best achieved when applied to very pale blonde hair to create for example pink, lavender, mint green tones.

17. Tone: Tone, in haircoloring, is the term used to describe a specific color—”golden” blonde, “coppery” red, “ash” brown. Colors are divided into warm tones and cool tones.

18. Warm: Warm is a tonal value that can apply to blonde, brunette, and red shades. A color is said to have “warm tones” if it tends toward yellow, orange or red. Warm colors include golden blondes, auburn brunettes, and coppery reds.

Tips To Improve Your Salon Visit

Tips To Improve Your Salon Visit

Have you ever wondered what is the most efficient way to achieve the look you desire? We want to share some helpful tips and tricks that will make your visit to Spencer’s Hair Design Salon everything you want it to be and more!

Appointments

Firstly, let’s talk about your initial appointment booking. All of our talented stylists are independent. They handle their own bookings, have varying prices, schedules and services. Since pricing varies, it is important to research salon prices for the individual stylist. It is courteous to cancel your appointment at least 24 hours in advance to allow others who are waiting to fill the empty spot. Also, confirming your appointment never hurts.

Salon Consultation

Consultation is advised and very important in helping us reach your expectations, this is good because it will give the stylist understanding of your desired look as well as which products and services to offer to achieve them. This will also give us a good idea of your appointment duration. It also provides a more thorough description of our services and pricing for Women. All consultations are complimentary but do require an appointment.

Wearing clothing that is comfortable and shows your style will give us an idea of your personal style and will increase your comfort level. So wear something that makes you feel fabulous! We have a changing area and offer a cover up cape to protect your clothing. However, for your added comfort, it is a good idea to bring along a t-shirt to be worn under the supplied gowns, especially when receiving chemical services. During consultation, we can also inform you of our forms of payments. As well as any other information you may need to make your experience with us a pleasant one.

Happy with the services you receive? Don’t forget to leave us a review and tell your friends how much you love the look we give you!

The Transforming Power Of Olaplex

Olaplex In Salon Treatment

Eric Pressly and Craig Hawker invented Olaplex, a single active ingredient, in February 2015. This is the latest in groundbreaking technology, sweeping the hair industry.

Our hairstylists here at Spencer’s Hair Designs are very passionate about maintaining the health of your hair while giving you the services you are looking for. That is what Olaplex allows us to do. We love the results we’ve seen using Olaplex.

What exactly is Olaplex?

Firstly Olaplex is not a conditioning treatment in any way. It is free of gluten, sulfates, and silicones. There is never testing on animals. There are no proteins that with over use cause hair to become brittle and break. It actually is a bond multiplier.

Imagine a strand of hair is like a ladder. The ladder steps are bonds within the hair. Chemical services, heat treatment, environmental exposure to chlorine, salt water, and UV radiation can compromise the hair. When the steps of the ladder become unstable the bonds are damaged or broken completely. At this point the hair strand can feel lifeless, swollen, rough, dry and even break off. By using Olaplex treatments before, during and after chemical services, Olaplex can repair and rebuild the bonds stronger than before. It improves the porosity of the hair. This means less color fading with longer lasting hair color between salon visits.

Olaplex is compatible with any chemical treatment. All hair color brands, semi-permanent oil infused color, permanent hair color, high lift color, direct dyes, perms, straighteners, relaxers, hair bleaching, toners and glosses are compatible. It is great on any hair texture. Curly, fine, course, straight, thick hair, gray hair, natural un-treated hair, and children’s hair all benefit. It improves the elasticity of the hair thus giving curly and wavy hair a smoother, prettier movement. Course and gray-wiry hair is tamed and more manageable. The hair quality is improved and protected during chemical services. It does not replace the need for appropriate shampoos and conditioners. Hair still needs moisture, hydration, and proteins to keep your locks at their very best.

Balayage trendy spring hair color

Auburn and caramel blonde

What is Balayage?
Balayage hair color is a French technique that is the latest dye trend to gain international popularity. The goal is to create soft, natural-looking highlights that look more modern than traditional coloring methods.

Balayage hair color options within brown palette are endless. You can go into reddish (caramel and auburn) tones of brown or try golden shades varying from browns to blondes. In case you would like a more neutral solution, it looks like this: dark brown for the under layer, medium browns washed to the lightest ash hues towards the ends and very light thin ribbons of brown blonde throughout the length here and there.

As opposed to standard highlighting methods that use foil or a cap, balayage is strictly freehand where the color is painted on. You can amplify the hue to vary from a soft wash to bright and bold depending on your personal preference. Outside of very short cropped hair, it can work on a variety of hair lengths, textures and colors, making it truly universal and flattering for all women. Most are drawn towards it because the maintenance level is relatively low; many are able to go four months between color treatments.
